UTBMS code list — free Excel and CSV download

One spreadsheet with every code from the original ABA UTBMS litigation, bankruptcy, activity and expense code sets — ready to paste into a billing system, a time-tracker tag list or a data-validation dropdown.

  • All codes sheet: code set, code, name, phase and the LEDES 1998B field it goes in (filterable).
  • One sheet per set: Litigation (5 phases, 29 tasks), Bankruptcy (4 phases, 21 tasks), Activity (11), Expense (24).
  • No macros, no sign-up. The CSV is UTF-8 with a header row.

Which codes go on a LEDES line

  • Fee lines: a task code (e.g. L120 or B110) in LINE_ITEM_TASK_CODE and usually an activity code (e.g. A104) in LINE_ITEM_ACTIVITY_CODE.
  • Expense lines: an expense code (e.g. E101) in LINE_ITEM_EXPENSE_CODE.
  • Phase headings such as L100 group the tasks; many portals reject them on a line item, so bill the specific task.

Codes and names from the original ABA code sets (1997) as published by the LEDES Oversight Committee on utbms.com — litigation, bankruptcy, activity, expense — checked 2026-10-27. utbms.com also lists other code sets (for example LOC revised activity and expense codes, eDiscovery, patent and trademark codes) that this file does not include.
